New Delhi Police registers case in JNU MMS scandal

NEW DELHI: Two weeks after the circulation of a video clip in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi Police on Thursday filed an FIR in the matter against two students and questioned those who were allegedly involved in the circulation of the video clip.

Officials said that JNU had handed over its report last week to the police after which a legal opinion was taken and the case registered. According to the sources, JNU has mentioned in its report that the accused boys were blackmailing the girl after filming the obscene act and had prepared the CD in JNU itself.

The case has been registered under section 292 (sale of obscene material) and sections 66E and 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station against two expelled students Janardhan and Balbir Chand. Police have got 12 witnesses to stand its case against the duo, in which JNU is the complainant.

The varsity was rocked by the scandal early this month after its security officers informed authorities with a video recording purportedly showing two students in a compromising position in a hostel room. JCP Amulya Patnaik said, "We got the report after which we took legal opinion on the use of the relevant sections. The investigations have been taken over now".

The JNU administration had approached police on February 11 after an inquiry committee headed by chief proctor H B Bohidar submitted its report to VC S K Sopory and recommended that the three students involved in the circulation of the video clip be charged. The JNU, in its report to police, mentioned the main role of two boys and Rahul was not indicted due to which he has not been named in the police FIR.
