Van der Sar to advise on replacement

Edwin van der Sar is expecting to have some input into who should replace him as Manchester United goalkeeper.

Van der Sar will return to the Red Devils' line-up against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Tuesday, having confirmed his intention to retire at the end of the season.

New-boy Anders Lindegaard caught the eye on his debut at Southampton on Saturday and Tomasz Kuszczak did well during the veteran Dutchman's three-game absence at the start of the year.

However, bigger names are also being linked with the Red Devils, including Van der Sar's fellow countryman Maarten Stekelenburg, who inherited the Dutch international spot following the United keeper's retirement following Euro 2008.

"I think the manager will talk to me," he said.

"Obviously you have some conversations about yourself or about other things.

"But I presume they have done some homework already because I don't think this is a big shock.

"I would expect them to have a few possibilities on their radar."

Not that Van der Sar gives the matter his undivided attention.

With a presence already secured in the latter stages of both the Champions League and FA Cup, the 40-year-old still has trophies to win.

Not that he goes in for neat endings.

And there was certainly not a thought that he might carry on until United would a trophy he deemed a suitable ending to his career.

"It would be strange thing to say I was going to carry on for another year just to do something. That would be like forcing things," he said.

"There is always a chance you could finish up with nothing.

"Sure, you would be disappointed if that is what happens. But that is not going to change what I achieved in the rest of my career.

"But with the players we have here and the determination of the boss, we must focus on doing everything right and make sure we get something."

Ferguson is expected to make a significant number of changes to the side that scraped past Southampton, including an entirely different defence.

Rafael should be available again after concussion and Patrice Evra has returned to Manchester after a family bereavement.

So, providing Nemanja Vidic has overcome a minor niggle and Rio Ferdinand has recovered from a groin injury that has kept United out of the last three games, it will be all change at the back, in addition to the return of Dimitar Berbatov and, possibly, Wayne Rooney up front.
