“The appellant (Koli) appears to be a serial killer, and these cases in our opinion fall within the category of the rarest of the rare cases,” a bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Gyan Sudha Misra said, adding that “no mercy can be shown to him”.
It took less than two hours for the apex court to confirm that Surinder Koli deserved the extreme penalty of death.
This ruling can be considered as the fastest dispensed in a death matter by the top court.
The bench confirmed the death sentence to 39-year-old Koli, who has also been awarded capital punishment by a trial court in three other cases of rape and killing of young women and children in Nithari.
While confirming Koli’s sentence, SC kept pending the CBI appeal against acquittal of Pandher, saying any order passed against him or in his favour can have a bearing on remaining cases which are at the trial stage.
Relying upon Koli’s confession, in which he had given “graphic details” of how he used to allure and kill young girls in Noida, the bench said.
Describing the crime as “horrifying” and “barbaric”, the court said that he used a definite methodology in committing the murders.
“He would see small girls passing by the house, and taking advantage of their weakness lured them inside the house and there he would strangulate them and after killing them he tried to have sex with the body and would then cut off their body parts and eat them,” the top court said.
